North Wales Fire and Rescue Authority

Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive

Dear Prospective Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in becoming the next Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive of the North Wales Fire and Rescue Authority.

The Authority, and the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, enjoys an excellent reputation within Wales and beyond. We have a record of delivering excellent emergency and preventative services to North Wales’ communities through our dedicated staff who have access to the best available equipment and resources.

We are proud of our achievements, particularly as many of them have been made against a difficult financial background.

The current Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive, Simon Smith, will be retiring in the summer of 2021 and we are looking to replace him with an exceptional candidate with the necessary combination of vision, enthusiasm and resilience. This is a rare opportunity to work in a challenging role which will require strong leadership, political and communication skills and a well-developed appreciation of the wider societal environment.

North Wales is highly regarded for the quality of its partnership working and has a high profile in leadership across the public sector. The Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive is expected to play a full and active part in this work. In addition, the role demands that relationships are formed and developed with those at the highest levels of the Welsh Government. Regular close contact at this level is a key component of the role.

North Wales is one of the most beautiful areas in which to live and work in the whole of the United Kingdom. The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service not only deals with urbanised and industrial areas but also operates in some of the most remote rural locations in Wales. Each presents its own challenges and we are looking for a candidate who not only appreciates what those challenges are but is able to bring forward innovative and workable solutions to them.

We have, of course, been dealing with the issue of COVID-19 for the last twelve months. We are proud of the way that the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has dealt with the relentless difficulties posed by the pandemic. We also recognise that, once the pandemic is over, Wales will be a very different place. We have already accepted that there can be no going back to how things were before. We expect our next Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive to have a vision for a new look fire and rescue service, designed to function effectively in a post-COVID world.

We expect that most candidates for this post will be existing senior leaders in United Kingdom fire and rescue services. We will, however, consider applications from exceptional candidates who have demonstrable transferrable skills from outside the fire and rescue sector. Please bear in mind that your evidence will need to be compelling in order to make a persuasive case to be shortlisted irrespective of your background.

Simon Smith will be delighted to discuss the role with prospective candidates. Please call Diane Davies on 01745 535253 to arrange.

I hope that you find the prospect of being the next Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive of the North Wales Fire and Rescue Authority to be stimulating and exciting. If you feel that you have the qualities to take on this demanding role then we would love to hear from you.

Councillor Peter Lewis, Chair of the North Wales Fire and Rescue Authority
